What happens when we die? In this special episode, we bring together four of the most detailed and moving near-death experience accounts from the show’s archives.
John J. Davis: The Orientation Center
John was 21 when a severe reaction to anesthesia stopped his heart for seven minutes. What he experienced in that time felt like hours. His story begins not at a tunnel or a white light, but on the other side of it, standing in an enormous marble building he was told is called the orientation center.
His spirit guide, Alan, spoke in his left ear throughout the entire experience, explaining what he was seeing. At marble tables sat orientation counselors whose sole purpose was to help newly arrived souls remember where they came from. John watched an elderly man who had just died from a heart attack sit down at one of these tables and gradually transform into a young man in his early thirties. His guide explained that everyone appears in their thirties on the other side.
What moved John most was the reunion that followed. As the man walked between the columns into a garden of extraordinary beauty, everyone he had ever known on the other side was there to greet him. His guide told John that Earth is the hardest of all the planets, and when we finish a lifetime here, everyone gathers to welcome us home.
Peter Panagore: The Purgative Fire of Divine Love
Peter was 20 years old, an exchange student on an ice climbing trip in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, when a series of hypothermia-induced errors left him and his climbing partner stranded on a cliff face through the night. As dawn approached and his body gave out, his vision compressed to a point and he crossed over.
What followed was one of the most philosophically profound NDE accounts on record. Peter describes being taken by an immense being of light into what he calls a purgative fire of divine love, in which he experienced every action of his life from the perspective of the people he had caused pain to, feeling their feelings simultaneously while the divine presence spoke love and forgiveness to him.
He describes his soul as a baguette with countless skewers running through it, each skewer a simultaneous incarnation, all happening at once, all connected to an oversoul larger than any of them. He saw the light woven into the fabric of the universe itself and was told: I love you, I have always loved you, I call you into being through love. He chose to return when he saw his parents’ faces and understood the suffering his absence would cause.
Dr. Rod Chelberg: Three Gifts From the Light
Rod was seven years old when a strep throat infection spread to his kidneys and landed him in the hospital for two weeks. A severe allergic reaction to penicillin filled his lungs with water, and he stopped breathing. He floated out of his body into darkness, then saw a beautiful white light and moved toward it, the terror dissolving into the deepest peace he had ever known. Doctors pulled him back just before he reached the light.
What came with him were three gifts. The first was the ability to see auras on people’s hearts in colors he understood to be divine love, divine life, and divine creativity. The second was the ability to leave his body at will, which he used as a child to explore the farm and eventually travel to Paris, looking down at an outdoor café with the Eiffel Tower visible above. The third was the ability to quiet his mind completely and feel a profound divine presence come to rest with him.
He told his friends. They said he was crazy. He shut it all down and tried to fit in. It was not until his adult medical career that the gifts returned, and he understood what they were.
Nanci Danison: The Attorney Who Downloaded the Universe
Nanci was a lawyer 16 years into her career when she died during a routine radiological procedure for breast cancer. What makes her account unique is that she describes herself as a deep afterlife experiencer, part of roughly two percent of NDE accounts that go all the way through to merger with the source rather than stopping at a threshold.
She did not know she had died. She went from sitting in the mammography room to being in the light without losing a single moment of awareness. What followed was what she describes as a download to a computer, only much faster: answers to every question she had ever had and answers to questions she did not know she was curious about. The largest portion concerned what humans actually are. Not human animals with names and bodies, but eternal souls temporarily inhabiting a physical form.
She looked down and saw Nanci sitting in the mammography room with a wire sticking out of her breast and thought: I wonder what all that vanity was about. She did not recognize herself.
She had not planned to come back. She kept saying to whatever intelligence surrounded her that somebody needed to tell the people down there everything she was learning. The next thing she knew, she was on her way back into Nanci’s body, saying: I didn’t mean me.
Part two of The Best NDE Experiences! is coming soon.
Transcript of the interview
John J. Davis 0:00
Every one of us has a spirit guide, and they actually help us plan our lifetime, and they are with us throughout our whole life. What my guide said is that every time somebody comes back from an earth life, they have a reunion, and the people that are there are all the people that he knew on the other side.
Dr. Rod Chelberg 0:18
I had a severe allergic reaction to the penicillin, it filled up my lungs with water, and I stopped breathing, so I was suffocating during that process. All the lights went out, I started to dissociate and float out of my body, and I knew I was dying. I was into this blackness, but then a beautiful white light appeared right in front of my visual field, and I started to go right towards that light. I became more calm and more peaceful, and there was a feeling of I'm going home.
Nanci Danison 0:49
Then all this information just started coming into my mind, like dropping into my mind, kind of like a download to a computer, only much, much faster. All the answers to all those questions that I'd always wanted the answers to, and a lot of topics that I didn't even know I was curious about. Biggest amount of information had to do with humans.
Peter Panagore 1:11
I'll mention that I went through a purgative fire of divine love, where all of my previous actions in my life I experienced from the point of view of the person I had caused these pains to witnessing it from their inside and feeling their feelings simultaneous to me, simultaneous to the divine being speaking love to me, calling me into being, showing me myself the truth of what I had just lived, but showing me this forgiveness and love that had always been in existence.
Jannecke Øinæs 1:47
I've been trying to get a hold of you for quite some time, because I came over your NDE, and it made such an impression on me. It's so rich with details, and it seemed like you got so many questions answered, and I felt that this can really be of giving people so much hope, because there's so many, many people wondering about what happens to our loved ones when we die, what happens to us when we die, and a lot of people are walking around with fear, and I really think, yeah, and it's time that we open up to more of the nature of our reality and see more perspectives. So, I'm excited to hear your story today. I'm curious, before you dive into it, How did you get the courage to start to share this story?
John J. Davis 2:34
You know, my experience happened when I was 21 and one of the things that I think that God gave me was the ability to have perfect recall, because even all this time has passed, I still remember my NDE like it happened yesterday, and I have tried to live my life in such a way that I can share my story to anybody who would listen, and it was really only just a few years ago that I decided I'm going to put this story on on social media, and because I would always just tell it person to person, and I thought, you know what, maybe if I, maybe I could reach a bigger audience if I went and shared my story, so I on Facebook, and that's when I first shared it, and that's when people started asking me to come on their podcast to share it, even to a larger audience. So I've always wanted to share it, because it gave me so much hope, and I thought if it helped me, it's certainly going to be able to help other people too,
Jannecke Øinæs 3:41
and not to jump ahead here, but did you sort of receive a message that you were supposed to share this as well, that you feel sort of an obligation to share it?
John J. Davis 3:52
Absolutely, I can tell you now, or I can wait till the end, whatever, whatever is easier or better for you,
Jannecke Øinæs 3:57
right? You know, let's dive into it, and I'll just give the stage to you.
John J. Davis 4:03
Well, I'll, I'll start at the beginning. Then, Janneke, this whole thing started when I was 21 years old, and my dad was in sales, and he won a sales contest, and part of what he won were two mopeds, or what we call scooters now, and we used to ride them in the neighborhood all the time, especially on the weekends. So one day I was out riding, and I had an accident, and I crashed into a treat, and the way that I landed, I landed in such a way that I tore the tendons off my right hand, and I had to go in for surgery. Well, I was only 21 I had never had surgery before. I had hardly ever spent any time in a hospital, so I didn't really know what to expect. So the day the surgery comes, we go in, my mom drives me down, and I'm in the hospital, and they start. To give me the anesthesia to knock me out for the surgery. Well, something happened, and I had a horrible reaction to the anesthesia, and it stopped my heart, and I actually died for seven minutes, and everything that happened in my near death experience happened in that seven minute time frame when I was clinically dead, but the most remarkable thing about it is during my NDE it felt like I was gone for an hour or more because they showed me so much, and that's what I'm able to tell people about my experiences, how this all unfolded well. Before I get much further, I just want to, I want to give a little bit of a background to your audience, so they can kind of follow how my story started. A lot of times we hear about near-death experiences, and they seem to have a similar type of flow to them. There'll be an accident or there'll be something happening when the person's in surgery and they die and they find themselves floating above their body looking down on the scene and they become aware of a tunnel and they start to move down the tunnel and at the end of the tunnel is this white light but we've never been told what happens at the end of that white light, because there's almost always somebody that this person knows that tells them, you know, hey, it's not your time, you're, you're, it's not your time to come to the other side, you have to go back to earth, so we never knew what happens when a person walks in to that light, well, for whatever reason, with mind your death experience, I skipped all that, and my story starts on the other side of that white light. So, here's, here's what happened when I died, and I woke up, and I was standing in the most beautiful building I have ever seen. It was a huge, huge long corridor building. It was so long that I couldn't even see the end of it. That's how long it was, miles long, and it was made of beautiful white polished marble. On the right hand side of me, if you can imagine 20 or 30 foot high columns of marble, beautiful marble all the way down as far as you could see. In the middle of this corridor were these tables, again beautiful white marble tables with benches all around each side again, all the way down, as far as you could see, and at these tables were sitting two people. Every table had two people, either two men, two women, a man and a woman, of all just all the way down as far as you could see to the left of me, the only way I can describe this is they looked like tunnels. It was solid marble with it looked like they had been these doorways had been cut out of the marble like doors.
John J. Davis 8:14
They were maybe seven or eight feet high, and they looked black, like if you looked into a, into a dark room, that's what it looked like, but they were all dark, and all the way down were these corridors, or these, or these doorways, and right about that time, in my left ear, I heard, my name is Alan, I'm your spirit guide, and I don't know if a lot of your audience has heard about spirit guides, I'm sure probably a lot of them have, but every one of us has a spirit guide, and they actually help us plan our lifetime, and they are with us throughout our whole life. So, what happened with me is all the way through my experience, my guide is talking to me in my left ear, and he's telling me what I'm seeing and what's happening, so that's how I'm able to tell audiences where I was, is because my guide was telling me, and he told me that the building that I was in is called the orientation center, and it's the first place we go to when we cross from that tunnel, when we finish our current lifetime, and we go down that tunnel, we enter the white light, and we end up where I was standing, which is the orientation center. So my guide said, look up at the next tunnel, and I looked up, and there was a man coming through. He was an elderly gentleman, probably in his 80s or 90s, and he was, he had his right hand holding his chest like he had pain, and my guide said he died from a heart attack, so he was coming through this tunnel. The counselor, the people that were sitting at these tables, they're called orientation counselors, and what they do is they help people remember where they're from, because we're not from earth, we're from the other side, that's our real eternal home. So she, this woman stood up. She walked over to this man, she took his hands in hers, and she walked him back to the table. They sat down, and she sat across from him, and she started talking to him. I was too far away to hear what she was saying, but my guide was saying that she's an orientation counselor, and what she does is help people remember where they're from, that you just finished a lifetime on earth, now you're coming back home to the other side, and her job is to help people just remember where they're from, because most of us, when we come into a lifetime, we forget where we're really from, and we just have memories only of Earth. So, when people go down that tunnel, when they finish their life, and they go down that tunnel, many people can be confused, and they don't know really what's going on. So, what? That's what the job of the orientation counselor is is to help people remember where they're from, so as she was talking, my guide said watch him closely. So I was watching him, and Janneke, all of a sudden he began to change right in front of my eyes, he changed from a man in his, who was an elderly gentleman, to a man, a young man in his late 20s or early 30s, and my guide said everybody is in their 30s on the other side, and I don't know why that is, I don't know if it's because of Jesus died at 33 or I don't know what the reason is, but we're all in our 30s, that's how we appear on the other side. So it was extraordinary to see him actually change into the soul, the age that he is on the other side. So I was, I watched this man, he died on earth. He came through the tunnel. He went through the white light. He had an orientation with an orientation counselor.
John J. Davis 12:29
And then one of the most extraordinary parts of my MDE that I think I love so much is when he stood up and he walked off to the right, and he walked between the columns, and as he walked between the columns, he went down three steps, and he had what I call a reunion, and it was in the most beautiful garden I can even describe, absolutely looked like a like a perfect English garden with flowers and plants and trees, and the color of the grass was so green it looked like emerald green. It was beautiful, and there were all these people there, and what my guide said is that every time somebody comes back from an earth life, they have a reunion, and the people that are there are all the people that he knew on the other side, and so many of the people that crossed over before he did, and so they're there welcoming him when he comes back, and all of us have that, and my guide told me that Earth is the hardest of all the planets, so when we come in here, when we're brave enough to come here to have a lifetime, and we finish it, everybody is there to greet us, and I've realized at that time that that's actually true, because life can be very hard for many of us, and when we get back to the other side, that's a huge, huge accomplishment, and that's why all these people are part of your reunion, and I thought that was the most amazing thing to see that when you finish your life, everyone that you have ever known, whether it was parents, grandparents, children, siblings, everybody you've known in your lifetime, everybody is there. So nobody really dies. When people die, they just go back home again, and home is on the other side, and earth is just a place that we come to to learn, to experience, to grow, and to become even more than what we were before we started. Each lifetime has a specific reason why we're here, and we plan. At and we chart that before we come in, so I'll keep going. The next thing my guy took me to, he took me to the outside of all these buildings first, so I could tell people what they looked like, and then he took me inside the orientation building that I was in, and this is something that your audience can can do some research on. They can just do a Google research or a Google lookup. There's a building in the country of Turkey, and it's called the Temple of Artemis. It's a r t e m i s, the Temple of Artemis in Turkey, and it looks like the building that I was in, in that orientation center, this huge, long, beautiful white marble building, and when they look it up on Google, you can see exactly what I saw, but it was just longer, just a much longer building. So he took me to this next building, and it was huge rectangle building, and all along the outside again were marble columns. So it took me inside, and inside I was in one of the rooms, and something I cannot express enough is the size of all these buildings. They were so large, we don't have anything like that here on Earth. Nothing compares to the size of what these buildings were. So we took them on the inside, and one of the rooms that I was in was a round room, like a look, just like a round theater, and on the top there were movie screens all around the top in a circle, and all of a sudden, as I was standing there, each one of those screens turned on, and it was like watching a movie, but the movie was about my life, and each screen that was on was a different age, one screen was playing, playing of me when I was a little baby. Another screen was showing me as an infant.
John J. Davis 17:06
Another screen was showing me as an adolescent, all the way up to the age that I was at the time, which was 21 And the whole idea behind this, my guide explained, was that it's a life review, every one of us, all of us have life reviews, and the reason is, if to see if you accomplished the things you set for yourself, because kind of like having a lifetime is what we do when we have a new year, a lot of us will go through a new year's resolution, well, that's the same thing we do when we have a lifetime. We actually plan what we want to accomplish, and so the life review is the opportunity to see how we did, and it was, was just amazing to see that. So, you could, you can see every aspect of your life on this, on these screens, and a life review. The next place he took me to again was another rectangle large building again with columns on the outside, and he took me inside, and the room that I was in now was looked like what we would say is a normal movie theater. It was long rectangular and with one movie screen up front, and what he was showing me at that point were past lifetimes.
Peter Panagore 18:31
I was 20. I was an exchange student from my university to another university, and that winter I went ice climbing in Western Canada, in the Rocky Mountains, in a place called Lower Weeping Wall. I had gone eight days of snow caving before that, and I'd been a winter camper and backpacker and National Ski Patrol member. So winter was my element. I'd been a mountaineer, but I'd never ice climbed, and my partner Tim was a certified lead climber, and we agreed to go on this climb, and I, I made a mistake, I made a judgment error, I chose to climb with an ax and a hammer, I did climb, I made it all the way up, but my choice slowed our climb down significantly, twice as long to reach the top as every other team on the ice that day, which put us at the top at dark. The sun set, the temperature dropped about 30 degrees in minutes. Hypothermia set in rapidly, our bodies began twitching with every muscle moving independent of every other muscle, and we knew that we were in deep trouble. And that night, throughout the night, I could tell you the whole saga of the high adventure survival, but I'd like to summarize it by saying that. Hypothermia steals your reason as it freezes you, and what that meant was we encountered problems that we created as a result of choices we made as hypothermia advanced and froze our brains, so that they ceased to function as efficiently as they did before, and our bodies simultaneously, we lost our.. it was a continuation of losing coordination throughout the night. It was digits freezing. I have all my digits. I.. some of them are numb and some of them aren't. And hypothermia is a slow moving disaster. It was in the dark on cliffs roped to each other with precipitous falls to our side and descents that left us in closer to where we wanted to go, but also deeper into time, and the deeper we went into time, the less energy we had, and the colder it got through the night, and the more difficult it became to move. I should say that at the top of the climb, when we first arrived, as the sun set, we knew we were going to die. We'd known we were going to die for a few hours. It became apparent that that was going to be what might happen to us. And when we sat there with our legs swinging off the ledge, when it first began, it was move or die, that was the choice. And so we had to move through the darkness of the night, as everything got worse, and we got more tired, and we had less energy, and our my eyeballs were freezing. It's a hard thing to say, mean what I mean, but I'd never felt such a thing before, and I found inside myself throughout the night, and my climbing partner, Tim, was in the same situation I was in, but as I found myself driving myself forward through the night with willpower that I did not know that I had, that then became this human instinct that was much deeper than my own interior willful drive. Suddenly I tapped into this part of my brain where I was animal in survival, and I had it wasn't like I was trying to funnel my mind into survival anymore. My mind was funneled into survival in a physical way that is still the depth of my willpower that I have never reached again. It's something that was well, it was survival or die. And so we made our descents, and we got to our last repel, and now we're standing on a ledge, and in the mountain are iron pins epoxied in with rings and carabiners and straps with carabiners were harnessed in and Tim is to my left, we're 100 150 feet up. It's way deep into the night, getting closer to dawn. Our hypothermia has seriously advanced. We were so little, we had so little energy that we didn't speak unless it was absolutely necessary, and we didn't move unless it was absolutely necessary. So here we are, we're on the ledge. I'm, I have the rope, it's tight to my harness. I have the other called the bitter end.
Peter Panagore 23:33
I tossed the bitter end out around the corner of this crag, back up the rappel. We had just come down, grabbed the rope, and I, and it jammed on like three inches, six inches. I couldn't move it. It was done. We were done. I couldn't release the rope. I couldn't climb back up, and hypothermia continued to advance. We couldn't get down, and we couldn't go up, and so to get to the near death experience I had this drive, and then suddenly this animalistic drive, when I, when my reasonable mind, what's left of my reasoning mind, I became aware that I, this was the end, and I was not getting off of this cliff, when that happened, I had this peace descend on me of acceptance, and this acceptance included thoughts of the divine, thoughts of my parents and my family, and especially my parents, who had my sister had run away, but for us it was vanishing, and it broke my family. Lots of families have trauma, lots of families get broken. I was in Montana and Alberta, Canada, to get away from that situation, but I, but it broke my parents' hearts, my mom in particular, and and then I began to fall asleep, and I. Crash to the rock and stand back up a bunch of times and I stood back up this last time and as I stood back up this last time I had this dark circle around my vision like a spotlight and I was in the middle of it but was my vision that was in the middle of it and it began to collapse very rapidly and as it closed into my face, I thought to myself, am I falling asleep again. Sleep had been coming like a curtain dropping. This was a compression, a compression, a tightening of my vision. And as it closed, I thought, am I falling asleep? And then I awoke it, and not in a way that I'd ever, ever awoken before. I awoke to a darkness that was in front of me, that extended into a distance that is inconceivable, the size of the universe, and nothing in it. And I am aware of myself, but I don't understand what's going on. I know that I've separated from my body. I know that I am outside myself. I know that I am confused, but not afraid, having had these other mystical experiences. This prepared me, but I didn't understand it. And way far in the far distance, the furthest distance, this pinprick of light appeared and came rushing toward me, and it enveloped me and communicated to me, I'm taking you, and I resisted because I didn't understand what was going on, but it took me anyway, and then I was separated. People talk about the silver cord of connection, I had no connection to my physical body, it was gone, and I was a being shaped like a human, but not made of molecules or energy or anything like that. I was made, and people say light, well, I'll say light, but this is all metaphoric. I didn't have a brain, I wasn't thinking in language, conceptualization was not what it was going on for me, and I was a being of light made of photons inside of this angelic being that I knew and was telling me and showing me intelligence and power and love, and I have a very long experience, and I want to make sure that I'm giving you what you need to hear, so I'm going to cut out a whole lot of things that happened. I'll mention that I went through a purgative fire of divine love, where all of my previous actions in my life I experienced from the point of view of the person I had caused these pains to witnessing it from their inside and feeling their feelings simultaneous to me feeling that same experience from my point of view simultaneous to the divine being speaking love to me, making love to me, calling me into being, showing me myself, showing me the truth of what I had just lived, but showing me this forgiveness and love that had always been in existence. I figured when I was a kid that I would be judged, because that's what the religion taught me, but no, I was not.
Peter Panagore 28:17
I judged myself in proportion to the unlimited, and in this proportion to the unlimited, I saw myself as impure, but only in comparison to infinite purity, who was who was love itself, and as I listened to this love itself calling me into being, into the now, I turned myself toward it, this tidal wave of illuminosity, irresistible to me, immense, powerful, and I was awash in it, and I inflated in with it inside of me and inside of me I became it, but less than it, more than it I'd ever been, but I having known myself, it was showing me myself, I saw myself as a as a single photon before a field of photons that was infinitely deep and tall and deep and wide, and I was super positioned with it, I was entangled with it, I was separate from it, I was outside of it, but I was the same as it. It was made of a septillion photons, all of them a singular intelligence, all of them one, all of them, many, and I was one of the many, and I was also separated from it, and I saw myself as a, as a lower, a lower self than my photon, where I was like a huge baguette with kebab spears stuck in it, and each kebab spear was. An incarnation of my living life, they were all simultaneous, but none of them were me. They were all connected to me, but the baguette was much bigger than the skewers, and many skewers, bigger baguette, and yet even the baguette, this oversoul of myself, was was cruder and more limited than this photonic sense of myself. I am going to cut to even the further chase and say that I made a choice to come back. I was shown the immense love that exists inside of all of the universe itself, woven into the universe is this light that is in everything. I saw the light being made from the darkness, the infinite darkness into which I couldn't see, where it poured out love into everything there is, including me, but and more so me than all the universe, and then showed me all of humanity, and that everyone was as valued as me, and this golden light inside of all of us, this love, this voice speaking to me. I love you, I love you, I have always loved you. I call you into being through love. This love was larger than all of the universes that were pouring out of its, its infinitely dark belly, universe after universe after universe. This immense love was larger than that, aimed at me, aimed at all of us. And then I saw my parents' faces, and I saw parallel lives, I saw their life without me, Mom and Dad, I saw their life with me, Mom and Dad with me alive, they had less suffering, still a lot of suffering, trauma does that, but without me multiple, multiply 10 times more, and the meanwhile, the voice was calling me, "Come home, come home to us, we love you, come home to us, and but it gave me this choice, and I said, "Do I have to stay here, and if I, if I, if I go back, can I come back here? And the voice said, yes. If you go back, you come back here to this state of being, to this understanding of my own near unit.
Peter Panagore 32:32
I want to say universality, but it's, it's not infinite universality, it's a more limited form of this, this immensity of intelligence that is all things and makes all things exist now, right now, and always, and I said then that I choose to live my life, and the voice said, 'You won't live your life, and sent me back, and I had a compression experience where I became more and more layered and denser and denser, more material, and then suddenly in front of me were a million doorways with tunnels, and and in the center of all of these doorways and these concentric circles were was like this beam of white light that was immense, and it came out of the infinite itself and I couldn't even see back into the heaven I had been in, but I could see the darkness and the light coming from it, illuminating these doorways, and the light was more intense, closer to the to the center of the of the light itself, as it went out through the doorways, it got faded, faded, faded, and the voice said to me, this angelic being, which also was the divine itself, somehow reduced for me. It said to me, "Choose, and, and I thought, creativity, writing a little bohemian life, a life of the heart, a life of humanity. I wanted to be human enough to be a flawed messenger of light, and I don't know why I chose that, but I did, and it was inside the outside rim of the light itself, not in it, but outside it, and I traveled down this tunnel, and I saw all these doorways, and all these doorways, led to all these other tunnels, or through all these other doorways that I had, the million doorways I had seen there, all these tunnels that I could, choices that I could make through all of them, and in the center of the mall was still the light, and then I was at my body, and I saw my body hanging on the cliff, kind of off the edge now, strapped in, and Tim, my partner, was down close to me. I couldn't hear anything, but I could see him holding me and shaking me, and I could.. I was very objective, was like, "Well, who's that? What's going on? And and then this angelic being pierced. The chest called zoom in close pierces the chest opens it up and stuffs me in, and it's horrendous pain. I had no pain on the other side, it was pain, did not exist, no suffering, all healing, all love, bliss, joy, adoration, understanding, knowledge, illumination, wholeness, truth of self, and now I'm in hell again of suffering, and I, and I'm inside this thing, haven't chosen it, and I look back up through this opening, and I can see this angelic being, and and then I see it close, and now I'm inside, and my and I feel my brain, this brain, my brain, it was my brain, but and I knew that it was my brain, but it was also this other thing, and it felt it were up like a, like a motor turning, and and my hearing comes back, and I hear screaming, and I feel shaking, and and I'm in wracked with pain, because everything hurts now, and I open my eyes, and Tim's close. Don't die, don't die, don't die, screaming at me, and he sees me with my eyes open, and he says, You're dead. I thought you were dead. You were dead. I thought you were dead. And he pulls me up, and he's talking, and he's talking, and he's talking to me. And I don't have any idea who I am. I don't know who he is. I don't know where I am. I just know that I hurt. I know that that I'm in this form that I don't understand, because now I'm confused. I know I am this other thing. What am I doing here? And how do I get out of it? And, and the rope came free. We descended, and we self-treated for hypothermia, and we survived. I came back an entirely different person than I had been the day before, and all of my earlier childhood mystical experiences kind of came into focus all at once, like, oh, that's what that was.
Jannecke Øinæs 36:57
And, as I understand it, this started when you were around seven years old, when you had an NDE, right?
Dr. Rod Chelberg 37:04
Correct.
Jannecke Øinæs 37:05
Would you like to share how it all started?
Dr. Rod Chelberg 37:07
Yes, I was had a strep throat infection, and that went into my kidneys and shut them down. So I was in the hospital for two weeks, and during that time they were treating me with penicillin, so around the middle of that I had a severe allergic reaction to the penicillin, and it filled up my lungs with water, and I stopped breathing, so I was suffocating, and during that process all the lights went out, I started to dissociate and float out of my body, and I knew I was dying, and I was very terrified at first that I was into this blackness, but then a beautiful white light appeared right in front of my visual field, and I started to go right towards that light, and as I went to the light, I became more calm and more peaceful, and there was a feeling of I'm going home, I'm going to where I belong, and I drifted in the most serene state. It was very quiet and very peaceful, and I was very comfortable. The fear was gone, about almost to the point where I could look inside this light, I was pulled back in a jarring manner to my body, and I woke up. So, in essence, the doctors in the hospital realized what was going on, that I was having a reaction, and they gave me rescue medicine, which worked. So, I popped back into my body and woke up. As a little child I thought this is a dream, I didn't understand what was going on, but after that I was fine, and eventually went home. So that was my near death experience, and from that, what I have realized now in my adult life is that during that transition time of this life, going into this new realm, excuse me, I had three seeds, if you will, that were planted inside of me. The first seed was the ability to see auras on people's hearts, and the colors that I saw were red, green, and blue, so red was divine love, green it was divine life, and blue is divine creativity. I started seeing these colors on people's hearts, and I knew that they were spiritual. I didn't understand until later my life what that actually meant, and I'll talk about that later. The second gift I had was the ability to leave my body at will, and that came about when I heard the Moody Blues song floating, and I thought, I wonder what it'd be like to float out of my body, so I laid down in. Bed got very comfortable, very quiet, and I just imagine that I'm floating, and I could feel myself becoming incredibly light, and as I floated out, I rotated, and I saw myself in the bed outside of my body, I was a pure thought of energy, I was.. I had no sensations, I could hear, I could see, there was no discomfort of any kind. So, at first I went around my room, but then later I started to grow around the farm, and it was really kind of fun. I'd see Dad working out in the field, and I looked down on him, and he couldn't see me, so it was like a little kid playing hide and seek, was rather fun. And then I took a trip that I remember quite well, as I went to Paris, and I saw an outdoor cafe where people were eating, and I could see them as clearly as I can see anything with my human eyes right now, and I remember looking up and seeing the Eiffel Tower, and that's how I knew it was Paris. That was my last trip until later in my life. I had started to do this out of body travel again, and then the third gift that I developed was the ability to concentrate and connect with the divine, to feel that deep presence of love. My mind would go absolutely quiet, and I would practice sitting in a chair and just getting quiet, slow my breathing down, and this presence would just come to me and be with me, which was really nice.
Dr. Rod Chelberg 41:42
I did not understand what it was at the time, other than I was very comfortable, and again that presence came later in my life, in my medical career, where it really became apparent as to what that was. So that's my near death experience after I had that, and I talked to my friends. They said, "We don't see colors, we can't flow, we can't do these things, you're crazy. So I shut it all down, and I said, "They must be right, I must be wrong, and you want to fit in as a kid. So I just shut everything down.
Jannecke Øinæs 42:19
Wow, that's quite an experience, and I can imagine as a seven year old you might have been very confused, right, having all these experiences, and then you hear that you're crazy. Like, did you not have anybody, like adults, your parents to nurture that or support that?
Dr. Rod Chelberg 42:39
No, I had no one, and I, I really shut it down. I just mentally, in my mind, I went, that's it, I'm done. I'm, I'm not going to go down that road. And, of course, then by then I'm turning later, I'm trained 18, and there's girls and cars and all the important stuff that you get distracted with, so that's right,
Jannecke Øinæs 43:02
so was that also why you perhaps became a medical doctor that you wanted sort of sort of to pursue a normal route in life, or did you have a passion to help people inspired perhaps by the near death experience?
Dr. Rod Chelberg 43:19
I believe I wanted to be a psychologist, and I loved talking to people and helping people, but that divine presence made it very apparent that you are going to be a medical doctor. Now, I grew up on a farm, and our whole family is teachers, farmers, mechanics, nobody ever had many didn't even have high school degrees, so to be a doctor was like so far out of the realm, but like when you got the, your, your message about the show, it's imprinted in you, there's no doubt you are going to do this, and and that's when I started to see in my heart it would turn green, and I could see that, so it was a divine impulse, a presence that propelled me, and I fought with that for a few years to get over the fear of and out of that template of you're a farmer, you're a mechanic, you're middle class, you'll never be a doctor, you're not smart enough, and overcoming those fears took a few years, but then that's what I did, overcome them, I persisted, and that divine help was always there. So I learned to tap into it, and then if you bang on the doors of any institution long enough, they get annoyed, and they say let them in, so they let me in.
Jannecke Øinæs 44:46
I'm really excited that you wanted to come on to the show, because I've heard parts of your afterlife experiences, and they are quite extraordinary, like I've actually. Ever heard anything similar, which is also interesting, because a lot of these NDEs are very different, but it seems like your experience is so extensive, it's so rich, and you got so many questions answered, and I'm really curious to dive into everything today, or as much as we can, but what I'm curious about first is, how was your life prior to these near-death experiences? Were you religious at all? Were you spiritual? How was your life like?
Nanci Danison 45:35
I was at the time that I died, I was an attorney. I had been reared as a Roman Catholic, so I had 16 years of Roman Catholic education, and then six more years of Methodist college, so I was a Christian, you know. I didn't believe everything that the church told me, because I didn't believe in bigotry, but I was also spiritual. I did a lot. I was a seeker, you know, one of those people that, you know, reads a lot, and back then we didn't have YouTube or even much in the way of an internet, so I didn't have that as a source, but I read a lot, and I really wanted to know the answers to my questions, you know, I was really kind of desperate to know the truth, and at the time that I died, I was had been practicing law for 16 years in a 270 attorney law firm. We had one of our partners had developed breast cancer, so my partners decided to have a mobile mammography unit come to our parking lot, and any woman in the firm could go out and have a mammogram, so that's what I did, and that's how I found out about breast cancer. I was scheduled for surgery, and before the surgery, I had a radiological procedure. It's called a needle localization procedure. There are two ways for a breast cancer surgeon to know where to cut. One is if you can feel a lump, then they feel the lump and cut around it. The other is if there's no lump to feel, they use a mammogram machine and stick a big wire into your breast inside of a needle and stick the needle in and put the needle and wire as close as they can get to the tumor, so I had three tumors, so it took, gosh, like about an hour and 15 minutes to do this procedure. Had to be done twice, and as a result of the procedure, I died. I had a severe allergic reaction and very low blood sugar, and my heart was just racing, racing, racing, racing, and it was.. I couldn't get my breath. It was beating so fast, and then it stopped, and I was relieved, because I wasn't panicking anymore about my heartbeat. I didn't realize it had stopped, like, for good, but that's how I died and crossed over into the afterlife.
Jannecke Øinæs 48:26
Wow, all right. So, so, okay, so you were a spiritual seeker, being a lawyer also. And then I'm curious, all of a sudden you go in to have this check, not expecting, you know, to have a cancer. Some people who have interviewed sometimes have a premonition that something is going to happen before they have an NDE. Did you have sort of a premonition that you know this will something will happen now, or where you're like, "I'm just going to have a test and this is going to be okay?
Nanci Danison 49:00
Not only did I not have a premonition, I didn't know I was dead for like a good part of the beginning of the experience, I had no idea I died, so oh
Jannecke Øinæs 49:13
wow, all right, so how is that possible, that because like it looks so like where we are right now, because you know I've never been dead, I have in between lives, but not as Ionicus. I can't imagine it.
Nanci Danison 49:32
I, after I left my body, and I went into blackness, and I saw this pinpoint of light in a distance, I thought, "Oh, I know what this is. I'm supposed to go into the light. So, I, as soon as I thought, "Go into the light, it came at me, and I spent a lot of time by myself in the light, so there wasn't anything to see or hear. It was just light, and you know, I felt that tremendous love and acceptance to. Total unconditional acceptance, as long as well as the love just going through me, and then things just started popping into my head, and I was trying to diagnose, like I knew I was alive, and see, I hadn't lost a single moment of life, going from sitting in the mammography room to being in the light, I was aware of every single moment, so I was trying to make a medical diagnosis of what had happened and where I was, and then all this information just started coming into my mind, like dropping into my mind, kind of like a download to a computer, only much, much faster. All the answers to all those questions that I'd always wanted the answers to, and a lot of topics that I didn't even know I was curious about. I mean, it's just tons and tons of information. The biggest amount of information had to do with humans and what humans are like, and the fact that we, the personality, the individual, the person that you know yourself to be, is not the body, it's the soul inside the body. So, I was given a lot of information about that, and how you know I'm an eternal being, I'm not a human animal named Nancy. So, after I was getting all this information, I also got other spiritual abilities that humans can't do, and so I was playing around with those, and with one of them I could see through the back of my head, and I saw down below me somewhere I saw Nancy sitting in the mammography room with the wire sticking out of her breast and hospital gown on and I didn't recognize her, I remember looking at her and thinking, huh, I wonder what all that vanity was about, because you don't look so hot now, and that was the only thing that I saw, but when I saw that, I thought, no, I couldn't have died. I mean, I'm still alive, you know, I'm more alive than I've ever been in my whole life, but that's when I started thinking, you know, what's going on here, and I saw a tunnel, like I was thinking to myself, well, if I was, if I died, I should have gone through a tunnel to a light, I didn't go through any tunnel. All of a sudden, I'm in a tunnel, and it wasn't, you know, like the celestial, you know, full of light and angels and loved ones. I get dirt, I get a dirt tunnel with rock sides that look like my railroad trestle had a just barely paved road through this railroad trestle tunnel, and I said to myself, I know I'm in the light, I'm not in this tunnel, you know, this is a fooling me, and I go fooling me. How can life fool me? Because that tunnel was every bit as real as anything Nancy had ever experienced, so I decided, as the attorney, I'm gonna get more evidence. So I conducted two experiments to see if I just thought a word, if it would materialize around me, just like human life, and it did. I did that twice more, and that's when I figured out I must have died without going through a light or without going through a tunnel to the light. Do you want me to go on? Because I have lots more.
Jannecke Øinæs 53:55
Yes, I know there's so, so much to the story. No, I'm just amazed, and how all these experiences are so different and so unique. I've interviewed quite a few people about near-death experiences, and yeah, and I think we all perhaps.. I don't know. Do you think we receive exactly what we need, that it's that God or the universe gives you exactly what you need to have as an experience to grow to expand.
Nanci Danison 54:25
I have been researching this. You see, my first afterlife visit was in 1994 and you know, when I started telling people about it, when I joined IONS, the International Association for Near Deaf Studies, and I started telling people about it, I realized I'm the only one telling this kind of a story, so I started researching, and what I have learned from reading 1000s of afterlife experiences is that somewhere around 97 98% I. Of souls that do actually go into the afterlife, you know, they go through the light or they go through a dark space, or they, they somehow get into the afterlife, they have experiences that are crafted uniquely for them, it's just like you said, you know, it's manifested by the soul and by other souls in the afterlife to give a soul the greatest comfort possible, because you know a lot of people know they're dying, or they know that they've died, or they've been in severe accidents, or you know it's extremely traumatic, so the afterlife process, the crossing over process is designed to bring comfort and to give each person exactly what they need to ease the trauma and to help them accept, you know, what's going on. But then there's a small group of people like me, maybe I haven't come up with an exact percentage yet, maybe 2% who recognize the process, and you're like, when I saw Vea, I said to myself, I know what this is. This small group of what I call deep afterlife experiencers. Our experiences are consistent. We all experience about the same thing. We use different words to describe it, but it's a very different experience than the 97% or the 98% of other afterlife experiences. I call those threshold afterlife experiencers. Wow, I don't.. I don't know what determines, you know, which type you have, but the deep experiences don't hit a barrier. We generally don't see loved ones, we don't have guides, we don't have, you know, any of the elements that is typical for near death for threshold near death experience,
Jannecke Øinæs 57:00
so with a barrier, what do you mean by that? Do you mean that you don't have, like, a choice to come back, or is that what you mean?
Nanci Danison 57:12
Well, no, you always have a choice. A lot of, actually, most near-death experiences that I've read after I've experienced that, I've read the accounts say that the soul reached a barrier or a boundary or someplace where they weren't allowed to progress further, right? Somebody, some loved one told them, you know, it's not your time, you know, you have to go back, or they're actually pulled back into their body by resuscitation efforts of medical professionals, or they decide on their own that they don't want to leave children, spouse, you know, parents, so they reach a point where they go back. Deep afterlife experiencers generally don't reach a point where they can't go any further, they, we go all the way to merger with the source, and there are a few that want to come back, you know, they, they get all the way, all the way through the process, and have resumed eternal spiritual life, but they still want to come back for one reason or another, unique to them, but some of us are just, we're there, and then we're back, not really, it doesn't seem like it's our choice, I think it is because before I came back into Nancy's body, I kept saying somebody's got to tell those people down there all the stuff that I'm learning, all the all these things that are happening to me, somebody's got to tell them, and the next thing I know, you know, I'm on my way back into Nancy, saying I didn't mean me, didn't mean me.
